Ugggh, Pork.  So this magazine is based in Eugene, and is unfortunately popular.  It’s filled to the brim with bullshit on every page:  tons of racism and quite a bit of misogyny and homophobia.  Lots of local business owners are friends with Aaberg and partners in the project.  Anyway, some friends of mine and I are trying to organize against them, although most of us are very inexperienced and can have trouble following through on things.  We recently contacted CALC, which is a local organization that does a lot of anti-fascist work, about them, and soon we’re probably going to start writing letters to try to get their advertisers to abandon them (hopefully forcing Pork to shut down).

Could you please show me actual examples of the “tons of racism and quite a bit of misogyny and homophobia” in PORK? Because I’m not seeing it. I’ve read every issue, and besides this year-old flap about one photo shoot, I don’t see this AT ALL.

I GOT INTO PUNK IN THE LATE 80S. AT THIS POINT, POLITICAL CORRECTNESS OR TOTAL BANALITY HAD TAKEN OVER MOST OF THE SCENE. ACTUAL ANTAGONISM WAS VERBOTEN ALTHOUGH EVERYONE SECRETLY WANTED IT TO HAPPEN. REAL PUNKS WERE CONSIDERED TO BE DE CLASSE & STUPID. YOUNG KIDS IN THE SCENE WERE OSTRACIZED FOR THE SAME REASONS. THE PUNKS WERE EITHER JUST MUSIC NERDS WHO WENT TO LOTS OF SHOWS & BOUGHT TONS OF RECORDS OR THE SHOCK TROOPS OF THE CRYPTO COMMUNIST LEFT. THAT’S IT. NONE OF THIS WAS WHY I GOT INTO PUNK. I LIKE PUTTING TACKS ON PEOPLE’S SEATS. I LIKE PUTTING CONFUSING, WEIRD, SCARY THINGS IN PLACES WHERE THEY ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE & SPOOKING THE CHICKENS. I LIKE SPINNING PEOPLE AROUND & BREAKING THEM OUT OF THEIR LITTLE WORN-OUT PATHS OF BORING DAY TO DAY LIFE. THIS IS NOT IN THE SERVICE OF ANY POLITICAL IDEOLOGY OR SPECIFIC GOAL. THIS IS IN THE SERVICE OF CHAOS & THE DISRUPTION OF PEOPLE’S BULLSHIT. THIS IS ALSO JUST A SMALL PART OF MY SHTICK. IF PEOPLE’S ONLY MORAL COMPASS IS THIS NONSENSE ABOUT CRITICAL RACE/GENDER/WHATEVER THEORY, THE DEVIL & PENTAGRAMS AREN’T GOING TO DO ANYTHING TO SPOOK THESE PEOPLE.
